Men who want to flirt with women have to realize: Women live in a state of continual vigilance about sexual safety. It’s like having a mild case of hay fever that never goes away. It’s not debilitating. You’re not weak. You’re not afraid. You just suck it up and get on with your life. It’s nothing that’s going to stop you from making discoveries, or climbing mountains, or falling in love. Sometimes you can almost forget about it. It doesn’t mean it’s not there, subtly sucking your energy. You learn to avoid situations that make it worse and seek out conditions that make it better.

If a female stranger is wary around you, it is not because she suspects you are a rapist, or that all men are rapists. It’s because a general level of circumspection is what vigilance requires. Don’t take it personally.

If this frustrates you, try to remember that women are blamed for lapsed vigilance. If a woman does get raped, everyone rushes to see where she let her guard down. Was she drinking? Was she alone? Was she wearing a short skirt? Did she go to a strange man’s room for coffee at 4am?

A woman must be seen to be vigilant as well as be vigilant. If she is deemed insufficiently vigilant, she will be at least partly blamed for any sexual violence that befalls her. If she’s regarded as downright reckless, that “evidence” can be used to completely exonerate her rapist. If it comes down to a he said/she said dispute over whether sex was consensual, as so many rape cases do, the dispute becomes a referendum on whether the woman seems like the sort of reckless person who would have sex with a stranger.

If a woman does go back to a strange man’s hotel room at 4am, even if she only wants a coffee and conversation, she’s more or less given him the power to rape her. No jury is going to believe she went up there for anything but sex. So, don’t be surprised if a stranger reacts badly to that suggestion.

Attention, Space Cadets: Do Not Proposition Women in the Elevator

I wish I didn’t need to reblog stuff like this. I wish people *got it*. But judging from the ridiculous response to these posts, stuff like this clearly still needs to be repeated.

I don’t care whether you are a man or a woman, you need to read this.  It’ll take you about 5 minutes, and it’s worth every second.

One thing for everyone: The fourth point?  It doesn’t have to be about sexual assault.  This is a key behavior of bullies and abusers.  If someone is doing this to you on a regular basis, it should be setting off alarms.

An excellent read. I hope our society can get to a point where women don’t have to be treated like this, where they don’t feel threatened just for existing.

OMG A THOUSAND TIMES THIS POST

GEE THANKS AUTHOR FOR INSERTING “BUT I’LL STOP IF YOU WANT ME TO” BECAUSE THAT TOTALLY MAKES HIM A REALLY REALLY GOOD BOYFRIEND, NOT MEETING THE MINIMUM STANDARDS OF HUMAN DECENCY FOR A PERSON TO TREAT THEIR PARTNER OR ANYTHING.
HOLY SHIT THE COMMENTS
“he’s a keeper for sure”
“Aww that’s so sweet”
NO
FUCK YOU
FUCK ALL OF YOU
NO APPLAUSE FOR THIS KIND OF RESPONSE BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT SHOULD BE EXPECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE—BEFORE PINNING HER WRISTS DOWN.

I suppose better wording would be “prevent future rape”. Though rape victims are usually the product of rapists. However, just rape in general. Would that help

No.

PREVENT FUTURE RAPISTS.

Because believe it or not, rapists are people who have been conditioned by society to believe that what they do is okay.

Alright, now do you think that if the story was written that way that it would help rape victims in some manner (or prevent future rape victims)

maybe you should stop thinking about “preventing future rape victims” and start thinking about preventing future rapists.

How am I making a show of it? Besides, I’m not talking about “dressing slutty”. I’m talking about if you don’t like a show, don’t watch it. If you think this comic perpetrates rape, why do you read it?]
Nobody thinks rape is okay. You’re using the same logic that Fox News reporters use to try and argue that video games somehow make your child more violent. Also, murder is less of an issue? What.

Wow okay so let’s all just bury our heads in the sand and forget about the bad things that exist, because that will totally fix the problem.

Actually, yes, people do think rape is okay. because they don’t call it “rape.” They say, “She asked for it,” or “Well, she was a slut anyway”, or “She secretly liked it,” or even this: “She LIED about it.” It’s a loaded word that nobody likes to use in relationship to themselves, but the truth is it happens A LOT MORE than you’d like to think it does.

Murder is, for the most part, isolated incidents that are perpetrated by sick individuals with sick thoughts about how society works and how it might work in their favor (ie, the murderer of Trayvon Martin). It is not applicable on the same societal and systematic scale that rape is, therefore, there is no “murder culture”.

And “murder” is also a problem for many people. Is it okay for you to put it in quotation marks like it doesn’t matter?

Far less of a problem than an issue that’s been socially conditioned to be seen as “okay.” When most people think “rape” they think of a horrific isolated act of violence that happens in back alleyways and are done by horrible people, when, in fact, it happens far more often and is perpetrated and condoned often by people who think highly of themselves as “good people”.

windmillzp said: Don’t pull that “male privilege” shit. If you don’t like something, why don’t you just ignore it? Stop trying to ruin it for everyone else. Makoto hasn’t even “raped” anyone yet. Calm down.

Wow, trying to derail me much? the fact that you can just say “ignore it, stop trying to ruin it for everyone else, calm down” is based on the fact that YOU HAVE MALE PRIVILEGE. You have been conditioned to condone this kind of behavior because IT MOSTLY HAPPENS TO WOMEN.

I AM GOING TO SAY IT FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME.

A PIECE OF MEDIA THAT PORTRAYS A POTENTIALLY UNSAFE SITUATION IS NOT PERPETRATING A GOOD IMAGE. PERIOD. THE FACT THAT PEOPLE ARE SUPPORTING SAID UNSAFE SITUATION ARE IN AN UNHEALTHY MINDSET. PERIOD.

Don’t you fucking dare to EVER put “rape” in quotation marks, as though IT DOESN’T MATTER. WELL GUESS WHAT. IT DOES. FOR MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD THIS IS A REAL SITUATION THAT THEY HAVE BEEN IN AND FOR MANY IT HAS NOT COME TO A GOOD CONCLUSION.

Yes, he  hasn’t actually “done anything.” Does that make anything he’s currently saying or doing excusable? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

shut the fuck up with your bullshit derailment, apologism and excuses, get off my blog and reconsider your male privilege (YES, RECONSIDER YOUR MALE PRIVILEGE)

you can let a some shitty media affect your life or you can move on. It’s not promoting the idea of rape as good. We have shows and videogames containing murder. Do we live in a murder culture? Naw, because everyone realizes its fiction. They move on

Every. Single. Piece. Of. Media. Affects. Your. Life. Whether. You. Want. It. Too. Or. Not.

Whether you consciously realize it or not. You also clearly don’t understand what rape culture is or the implications of the situation being portrayed here. And in fact, yes, this page IS portraying the idea that the situation she’s in (we don’t actually know what is going to happen to her next) is good—you should look at the comments section, where “Omg that’s sooooo hot” “Makoto’s finally becoming a real man!” run rampant. And see—NOBODY IS CALLING IT RAPE. When in fact, it has the real potential to turn into a situation of noncosent, which, hello, IS RAPE.

The word “murder” is a word that is associated with bad ethics and bad people. Human beings generally want to shy away from the idea that they can be seen as “bad” people and therefore try not to “murder” people, yet a lot of murder happens when the perpetrator thinks they are doing the RIGHT, ETHICAL thing (however sick and twisted they might be) to the victim, and the same is true with most rapes and sexual assault.

So please fucking check your male privilege (look it up if you don’t know what it means, and you probably don’t) and have a nice fucking day, and no, I will not “just move on” because as a woman, and as a woman of color, I do NOT HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF DOING SO.
